Summer has ended and the kids are back in school, which means fall is fast approaching and cooler weather is on the horizon! The onset of chilly weather may be an indicator to pack your garden up for the season, but we’re here to tell you that the growing doesn’t have to end. With the help of grow lights and a handy pair of wheels, you can move your greens indoors for the fall and winter months. Not only does indoor growing offer the possibility for you to experiment with new crops, but it also allows you to make fresh, healthy choices when produce at the store looks wilted, drab, or is unavailable.
When it comes to indoor growing, you have several options in terms of crops you can grow. But, generally, it’s best to stick to leafy greens and herbs and shy away from fruiting crops, such as tomatoes, squash, or cucumbers. To get you started on the right track, we’ve rounded up our favorite go-to indoor crops to help get your winter garden growing.
Offering vitamin C, calcium, and potassium, kale is the perfect indoor crop candidate to keep your immune system healthy all season long! It’s best as a cool season crop, making it a versatile option to grow indoors or out, and there are several varieties to choose from — like Curly kale, Lacinato kale, and Red Russian kale. To start growing kale, plant about four seeds per rockwool cube. Seeds should germinate within 1-2 weeks.
Basil is the source of so many delicious dishes, and its affinity for warmer temperatures makes it a great crop for indoor growing. Like kale, there are several varieties to choose from, though the most common and popular versions are in the sweet basil family. This variety is great for topping dishes or making pesto.
The smallest and mildest member of the onion family, fresh or dried chives are great for topping dishes and adding to soups for extra zest. All chives thrive in full sun, but they will tolerate light shade. Six to eight hours of grow light exposure is optimal.
A mainstay in salads, stir fries, and other dishes, spinach is a versatile and popular green. Plant about four seeds per rockwool cube with germination in 1-2 weeks. Harvest spinach as soon as the leaves are big enough to eat.
5. Swiss chard
Swiss chard is an excellent source of vitamins A, B, C, and K, as well as calcium, copper, iron, and potassium. It’s among the healthiest foods you can eat and easy to grow with Tower Garden! Because it grows tall, we recommend planting Swiss chard in the top section of your tower.
